Why You Shouldn’t Manage a Project…Alone.

Posted by on Aug 20, 2015 in General | No Comments

When you think about the word “project management”, most of us think about a single project manager whose responsibility it is to lead a team, preside over meetings or present monthly updates.

Maybe back in the 50’s project management was a single job filled by a single role.  Today, it’s much more dynamic, multi-faceted and complex. Trying to manage a project alone is a recipe for disaster.

Think about all the tasks that fall under project management:

  • Project valuation
  • Business case development
  • Project planning
  • Cost estimating
  • Cost control
  • Schedule management
  • Risk management
  • Quality assurance
  • Supply chain management
  • Stakeholder management
  • PMO set-up & recruiting
  • Metrics & reporting
  • And more…

There’s a wealth of data to support that no matter how large or small a project is, project management is rarely ever a solo sport. It’s an assembly of people, processes, tools and technologies – all supporting each other and working in concert to deliver a successful project.

Start with a Project Support Plan

If you’re a project manager, the last thing you want to do is manage a project alone. You need support and you need to be able to articulate what you need and why you need it.  One of the tools we recommend to help project managers obtain the support they need is a Project Management Support Plan.

Below is a simple template of a support plan that you can use to make the case for the type of project management support you need.
