What Do You Measure?

When you’re tasked with guiding an organization through change, you should be prepared to answer the tough questions:

  • What is the ROI for change management spend?
  • How are you planning to overcome resistance to change?
  • How do you know if employees are adopting new technologies, processes and behaviors?
  • Are your communications and training efforts changing the culture of how work gets done?
  • Are business processes becoming more efficient?
  • Are key stakeholders ready for hand-over to operations?

Given that managing change is as much an art as it is a science, as a change leader you need to be armed with reliable information to demonstrate that your plans and programs are gaining traction. Measurement is essential because at the end of the day…you can’t manage what you don’t measure.

Start with a Scorecard

Since there are an unlimited number of ways (both quantitative and qualitative) to measure change, we recommend starting with a Change Measurement Scorecard that narrows the field down to just the right measures that will help you gain traction for the change program.
A Change Measurement Scorecard should be customized to your change initiative and focused on measurement objectives, critical success factors and key measures that can be used to improve change readiness for both the project and organizations impacted by the change.

Above is an example of an HR Effectiveness Scorecard we recently developed for a Fortune 100 client to help transform the HR department from a purely administrative function to a true strategic partner using change measurement as a game changer.  In this example, we customized the scorecard to align with the department’s core mission and focused on key objectives, critical success factors and measurement targets that can be used to improve effectiveness for both the HR department and organization.

Benefits of a Change Measurement Scorecard include:

  • Quickly identify opportunities to manage change
  • Define change metrics & reporting requirements
  • More quickly and efficiently report change progress and ROI
  • Gain alignment on quick-win opportunities to improve effectiveness
  • Identify thresholds, targets and action plans to improve
  • Identify and mitigate barriers to leading successful change
