Dan here to share with you a quick overview about Darby Consulting’s technology adoption program.
Darby Consulting is recognized as one of the top project and change management
consulting firms in the education industry by the Project Management Institute. We provide project and change management services to help Higher Ed and K-12 organizations implement technology change from administrative and student information systems, teaching
and learning management systems to identity protection and cyber security systems.
We help manage the people side of technology change. We’ve now helped over 30 colleges and campuses empower end-users to minimize resistance to change and focus their energy on unlocking the full potential of information systems whether you’re implementing software in the cloud or custom developing an application to fit your organization’s needs.
It all requires people to change. It requires administrators, faculty, staff, teachers and students all working together to adopt new skills new behaviors new processes and even new features and functionalities. The hard part is getting people to change particularly in an education environment where there are few mandates. Success just isn’t always guaranteed. In fact, a recent study by the Standish group of over 8,000 software deployments they found that for most IT initiatives trying to get people to change to a new technology platform leads to one of three possible outcomes.
The best possible outcome is what we all want and that is success. The study showed that on average, sixteen percent of projects are considered a success by their organizations.
On the flip side, the study also found that thirty-one percent – nearly twice that of successful projects – were considered a failure, meaning they had low end user adoption they were delivered over budget over time estimates. The system was ultimately cancelled or replaced and that’s not a great place to be if you’re one of those responsible for implementing a new information management system.
You’ll often notice that people talk about technology change in terms of success or failure but what typically happens for most technology deployments is really something in between. The technology is neither a success nor failure. It’s what we call challenged and majority of projects that fall into the challenge category – fifty-three percent in most cases – are challenged meaning the system is operational but it has declining or stagnant end user adoption. Many of the new features and functionalities go mostly underutilized and a majority of end users are late adopters and resistant to change.
Basically, the system works but it’s on life support. Again, not a great place to be when we look a little deeper into what causes IT projects to be challenged.
The root causes according to the study are mostly people-related from a project management perspective. It’s often poor planning or ineffective training and communications from a change management perspective. It’s mostly ineffective sponsorship and issues related to resistance to change what makes Darby Consulting’s technology adoption program unique is that it is centered around higher ed and K-12 organizations and combines best practices processes and tools of both project and change management.
The Technology Adoption Program by Darby Consulting provides a four-step framework that focuses on the people side of technology change. It’s used by over 30 colleges and campuses today it’s applicable to all types of colleges, universities, K-12 and learning organizations because it provides a step-by-step process, tools and templates designed to align, plan, deploy and enhance end user adoption of technology.
You can use it at any stage of technology deployment. You can use it to support a pilot full deployment ongoing operations or even expand the use of system enhancements. It’s an affordable program that includes our on-site support team to help implement the program at every step of the way.
