Building IT Capability, Going from Good to Great
Darby Consulting helped Parsley Energy, an independent oil & gas company operating in the Permian Basin to plan and implement a large portfolio of software and hardware related IT projects focused on transforming business processes across land acquisition, drilling and completions, operations, legal, risk and accounting departments.
Given the increased number of projects needed to support a business in hyper-growth, the client needed to more than double the size of its IT department with seasoned IT project managers, business analysts, QA testing and training specialists with expertise in planning and implementing complex hardware and software projects relevant to the oil and gas industry. In addition, the client’s headquarters were located in Austin, TX where there were few professionals with the industry experience required. The client also needed to implement a PMO office to achieve greater coordination and quality standards.

Darby Consulting leveraged its network of over 1,000 IT professionals across Austin, Houston, Dallas and San Antonio to assemble a full-time, dedicated team of experienced consultants with energy IT experience to execute the client’s portfolio of projects. A dedicated project coordinator was also assigned to quickly facilitate the search and screening of potential candidates. Darby Consulting established corporate apartments and coordinated all logistics to relocate hard-to-find experts to Austin. All travel costs were included in the client’s bill rate which was 30-40% below that of other consulting firms. All project members received our proprietary onboarding orientation and IT project success training as well as access to our cloud-based PMO system. In the first year, Darby Consulting saved the client $1.5M in consulting fees, $300,000 in travel cost and $50,000 in enterprise project management software for a total savings of $1.85M.
